Jobber alternatives for a one-person business

· 7 min read

For a one-person trades business, the best Jobber alternative is the one that includes what you use every week (scheduling, estimates, invoices, getting paid, and tracking expenses and miles) on the plan you can afford, and doesn’t jump in price the day you hire a helper. Jobber’s Core plan is a fair deal for a solo operator who only needs scheduling, quotes and invoicing. If you also want time and expense tracking or automated reminders, those sit on a higher Jobber plan, and that’s where the alternatives earn a look.

Here’s how the options compare at one person, using each vendor’s own published pricing.

What does a one-person trades business actually need?

Write your list before you look at anyone’s feature grid. For most solo owners in plumbing, HVAC, electrical, cleaning, lawn care or handyman work, it comes down to:

  • A calendar you can move jobs around on from your phone.
  • Estimates the customer can sign, ideally with a deposit.
  • Invoices you can send from the driveway, with a pay link.
  • A record of every customer: address, notes, history, photos.
  • Expenses, receipts and miles, so tax time is not a shoebox.
  • Reminders that chase unpaid invoices so you don’t have to.

Everything else (marketing campaigns, call tracking, dispatch boards) is for bigger shops. Don’t pay for it yet.

What does Jobber’s entry plan include?

Jobber Core is $29/month billed annually, for one user, and every extra person is $29/month. It covers scheduling, quoting and invoicing. Jobber’s pricing grid puts automated client notifications, time tracking, expense tracking and QuickBooks sync on Connect, at $99/month billed annually. Jobber’s offline mode lets you view visit details and add notes without signal.

That’s a reasonable product for a solo operator who wants the basics. The question is whether you need what’s on Connect.

How do the alternatives compare at one person?

Monthly price at 1 person Time and expense tracking Automated reminders Add a second person
FieldFlow $19 Included Included (email) $19 total
Jobber Core $29 Connect plan Connect plan $58 total
Housecall Pro Basic $59 Expense cards included; time tracking plan not stated Scheduled, on-my-way and finished notices Essentials, $149
QuickBooks Simple Start $38 Expenses included; time is an add-on Invoice reminders Next tier up

Prices are the vendors’ lowest advertised rates, billed annually where offered, as checked on October 17, 2026; month-to-month costs more. Our pricing page has the full ledger, and the Jobber and Housecall Pro pages do the math for bigger crews.

When is a spreadsheet enough?

When you can see the whole week on one screen and you remember who owes you. A shared calendar, an invoice template and a spreadsheet of customers is a real system for a handful of jobs a week. It breaks when you start missing follow-ups, retyping the same line items, or digging through texts to find a gate code. That’s the point to move, not before.

When is QuickBooks the better pick?

If your accountant already lives in QuickBooks and your work is mostly invoicing, QuickBooks Online may be all you need: it does invoices, expenses and mileage. It is built around the books, and its pricing page puts appointment scheduling on Essentials and up, not Simple Start. You can keep QuickBooks for the books and use a field service app for the day; FieldFlow can push invoices and payments into QuickBooks Online from the web app if you go that way. See FieldFlow vs QuickBooks.

Where does FieldFlow fit?

FieldFlow is field service management software for 1–5 person trades businesses, at $19/month with every feature on the one plan: scheduling, estimates with e-signature and deposits, invoices with pay links, email follow-ups, expenses with receipt photos, a mileage log and a profit and loss report. A second, third or fifth person costs nothing extra.

What it doesn’t do yet: route optimization or GPS tracking, online booking where customers pick their own time, and automatic texts to customers from your business number (reminders go by email; you can text a customer from your own phone with the message filled in). If any of those are the reason you’re shopping, FieldFlow isn’t the answer today. The full list is on the facts page.

How should you decide?

Run a real week through the one you’re leaning toward. Book the jobs, send the estimates, invoice from the driveway, and log the receipts. FieldFlow’s 90-day free trial needs no card, so you can do that beside whatever you use now and keep the one you actually reach for.

Questions owners ask

Is Jobber worth it for a one-person business?

It can be. Jobber's Core plan is $29/month billed annually for one user, and covers scheduling, quotes and invoices. Time tracking, expense tracking, automated client reminders and QuickBooks sync are on Connect at $99/month. If you need only the Core features and never hire, Core is a fair choice.

What is the cheapest field service software for a solo operator?

A spreadsheet and a calendar cost nothing and work at a handful of jobs a week. Among paid apps, compare the plan that has the features you use, not the entry price: FieldFlow is $19/month with every feature on one plan, Jobber Core is $29/month and Housecall Pro Basic is $59/month, billed annually.

What happens to the price when I hire my first helper?

On Jobber Core, a second person is another $29/month, so two people pay $58. Housecall Pro Basic has one seat, so a second person means Essentials at $149/month. FieldFlow stays $19/month however many people you add.
